What is a Live Edge Table?

A live edge table is much more than just a table made of wood.

It is a piece of nature that has grown over time – with individual wood grain, a natural tree edge, and a story that often goes back decades or even centuries.

At Stammdesign, we transform massive tree trunks into unique pieces of furniture that combine nature and modern design. Thanks to our characteristic glass substructure, the table appears to float weightlessly in the room.

A live edge table thus becomes the centerpiece of a space – and often also the center of life.

A live edge table is a table made from a solid wood slab cut directly from a tree trunk and usually retains its natural tree edge. This preserves the original shape of the tree and makes each table a unique piece of furniture.

1. Every grain tells a story

No tree grows like another – and that is exactly what makes live edge tables so fascinating.

Knots, grain patterns, and natural color variations are not imperfections but expressions of the tree’s history. What others might call “wood defects” is, for us, nature at its most beautiful.

A live edge table brings that story visibly into the room.

2. The natural tree edge

Typical for live edge tables is the so-called natural edge.

The outer shape of the trunk is preserved. The edge of the table therefore does not follow a straight line but the organic growth of the tree.

The result: a table with character – powerful, lively, and unique.

3. Solid wood instead of mass production

Live edge tables are made from genuine solid wood. This means:

• no veneers

• no chipboard

• no mass production

Each table is individually crafted from a single tree trunk.

At Stammdesign, the wood is carefully selected and processed in our Austrian manufactory with experience, patience, and craftsmanship.

4. The floating effect

The trademark of Stammdesign is the floating table.

Thanks to almost invisible glass legs, the massive wood slab appears to float above the floor. This combination of natural strength and modern lightness is what makes our tables so special.

Sustainability is a central part of Stammdesign’s philosophy.

We use only wood from regional forests within a radius of about 250 kilometers. Only trees that have reached the end of their natural life cycle are used – for example due to age, storms, or disease.

From a tree that might otherwise remain unused, a piece of furniture for generations is created.

Or put differently:
Every tree has a soul – we let it live on.

In addition to live edge tables, we also produce so-called natural tables. The difference mainly lies in the design.
