The art of lightness – floating designer tables

Designer tables from nature that float
Wood is heavy, solid, primal. And that's exactly our mission: to keep this originality and naturalness in focus. That’s why we let nature—in its purest form—become weightless. Simply float...
1. Nature as a starting point – and source of inspiration
For our tables, we use exclusively regional hardwoods – especially oak, walnut, ash, and elm – from sustainable forestry within a radius of about 250 km. The short supply chain minimizes emissions and ensures maximum control over quality and drying. Our woods undergo technical drying in our drying chambers – a process that relieves stress in the wood, increases dimensional stability, and prevents pests.

The unique grain as a sign of history & design feature
Instead of standardizing wood, we focus on its individuality: flames, reflections, knots, or cracks are not concealed but used as design elements. Each table thus becomes a bearer of the tree’s story – with documented origin.

Wood as a CO₂ store & sustainable material
Wood stores carbon even after processing. A Stammdesign-sized table (approx. 2.5 m × 1 m) stores on average over 100 kg of CO₂ – a climate-positive effect that lasts for decades. We seal our surfaces with natural oils or certified resins – pollutant-free, food-safe, and durable.

2. The technology behind weightlessness
Base frame construction: How is the “floating look” created?
The secret lies in the statically sophisticated combination of laminated safety glass (VSG) and precisely milled stainless steel or wooden connectors, invisibly embedded into the tabletop. The visual lightness comes from the minimal base area and carefully designed shadow gaps.
Glass as a supporting element
We mostly use laminated safety glass (VSG) with a thickness of 20 to 24 mm, which is break-resistant even under high stress due to its layered structure. This way, the construction can support entire helicopter loads (yes, really!!!) – while remaining almost invisible.
And yes, you read that right: our table bases can even withstand a helicopter. You can find the details and proof in the video here.

Design principle: Reduction to the essentials
The glass legs draw the eye away from the construction – towards the tabletop. This is no accident: removing what is unnecessary. What remains is the essence.
3. The impact in the space – architecture translated into furniture
In architecture, we speak of negative space – the power of emptiness. Our tables embrace this principle: they occupy space without blocking it. Present, but not overpowering.
Benefits in interior design:
Ideal for lofts or rooms with exposed concrete, as they bring lightness to the space.
Work as a contrast to textiles (linen, wool) or textured walls.
Reflect the lines of modern architecture: clean, open, clear.
4. Timelessness over trends
Our tables don’t follow short-lived interior trends, but draw on archetypal forms: the rectangular dining table, the oval top, the continuous end grain. These shapes endure for generations because they align with an inner sense of order.
For us, sustainability means:
Modularity: Table legs can be repositioned or replaced if needed.
Repairability: Surfaces can be sanded, oiled, or partially repaired multiple times.
Longevity: Many customers pass their Stammdesign tables on as family heirlooms.

Conclusion:
A Stammdesign table is more than a piece of furniture.
It’s a tribute to nature – and an invitation to recognize what truly matters.
In stillness. In lightness. In the now.
It is architecture, sculpture, nature, and function in one.
It floats – physically and emotionally.
It holds what you need: space, calm, clarity.
And it endures – for generations.
